"Bink"

Binosuke "Bink" Sage was once a pirate who sailed the Ruby Sea. However, as he got older, he eventually decided to leave that life behind him. He retired to be a fisherman, with the hopes of one day fulfilling his dream of opening his own traditional La Noscean tavern. Tragically, this would never come to pass, as he died of a heart attack just days before he planned to open Bink's Brew to the world.

A former rival of old man Bink, he and Skala had nearly killed each other a hundred times before he chose to retire. After that, their beef was squashed, and they maintained an odd sort of friendship as the years went by. She had planned to help Bink run the tavern on its grand opening, but after Bink's sudden death, she had no choice but to inherit his dream herself.
Yvalona Pyke

A fan of Skala's from her pirating days, she was unsure how she felt about seeing her idol step down from piracy to run a restaurant, but after meeting Skala and talking to her, she decided to try working there part-time, in order to understand Skala's change in lifestyle.

The Part-Timer Saga: Part One
“Time for another day at Bink’s…” Skala sighed as she finished getting everything ready to open. It had been over a full year now since she’d started running Bink’s Brew. At first, she’d been reluctant, only doing so to pick up the torch for her old rival Bink, who’d died so unexpectedly. She figured she’d just do it for a short while, enough to sufficiently honor his memory, and eventually, she figured she’d get tired of it and find some other person to sell the business too. Then she could go back to her old lifestyle of travel and adventure. In the end, though, she’d come to enjoy the work far more than she expected. Sure, she definitely missed being able to travel wherever she pleased, but there was a certain satisfaction she found in her job. In giving others a respite from their own travels, hearing their stories, serving them drinks. She never would have expected she’d be able to meet so many different kinds of people without even leaving Vylbrand.Still, she thought… there was just no way she could see herself doing this forever. She knew herself too well. Sooner or later, she’d get bored, and want to stop, or at least take an extended break. In that case, why not hire someone who can help out when that happens? Just as she was thinking this, she heard the familiar creaking on the stairs that told her someone was coming down below deck.“Sorry, we ain’t open just yet! Come back later!” She called out.“Oh, did I show up too early? That’s my bad… Just happened to pass by this place and thought it seemed worth checkin’ out. Pretty nice place, by the way!”“Aw, why thank ye! Much appreciated.” Skala turned around to see the face to which the cheerful voice belonged. Standing there was an unfamiliar Highlander woman who looked to be about five years younger than Skala herself, with bright red hair and blue eyes. The woman’s jaw dropped. “You…. you…. You’re…”“I’m?”“You’re SKALA HEEMORA!”Skala smiled. “Aye, that’s me. Ye know me from somewhere?”

“Know you?! W-well, I would never be so bold to say that, but… aye, I followed your career for a long time. Since your time in the Far East, an’ up through your career with the Maelstrom. You're practically my idol! I was even there when ya fought that duel to leave the Maelstrom. My jaw nearly dropped from how awesome you were!”The girl positively sparkled as she went on and on. Skala couldn’t help but smile.
“Heh, is that right? Didn’t know I had such a fan. What’s yer name? Since ye already know mine.”“Ahhhhh!! I forgot my manners! You must think I’m such a dolt! Name’s Yvalona Pyke, but all my mates call me Yva! I set off to sea myself after hearin’ about your exploits, though I never got half the reputation you got. Man, I always wondered what happened to ya. Your career kinda went silent after ya left the Maelstrom. Never thought I’d find ya here. How does such a mighty pirate find herself runnin’ a dinky little restaurant like this?”Dinky? thought Skala. I thought she said it was nice.“Well… that’s a long story. It was the dream of an old friend o’ mine to open a restaurant out o’ his old pirate ship, but he ended up kickin’ the bucket right afore he was supposed to open. I didn’t wanna see his dream go unfulfilled, so I took it on fer meself.”“I see… Aye, that makes sense. But, eventually, yer gonna wanna move on from this place and go back to adventurin’ again, right?”“Well, that’s what I thought when I first opened up. But I’ve actually grown to really like doin’ this.”“How long have ya been doin’ it for?”“Over a year now.”“A whole year??? And ya ain't clawed your hair out yet?”“Like I said, I like doin’ this. Though it’s true I do long fer adventure from time to time. When that gets to be too much, I just take some time off.”“Even so… I don’t think I could EVER see myself doin’ somethin’ like this.”Skala smirked. “That so? Why don’t ye give it a try, see how ye feel then?”Yva blinked. “M-me…? Workin’ here?”“Aye. As it happens, I was just thinkin’ I could do another worker, to lessen the load. Ye could be me new part-timer.”“I… I’unno… I mean, I’ve never even done anythin’ like this before…”Skala smiled. “Neither had I, but I turned out fine. An’ most o’ it I had to teach meself, so ye’d be better off. I can teach ye everythin’ ye’d need to know. Wouldn’t ye like to learn from the great Skala?”“Well, aye, more’n anythin’, but I never imagined it like this…! I… I just don’t know…”“Why don’t ye just sit there an’ watch fer awhile? An’ see how ye feel after.”Yva hesitates for a moment before responding. “...Aye, aye I can do that much, at least.” And so she sat and watched. After the day was done, Skala approached Yva, who’d been watching quietly in the corner the whole time."So, what did ye think?""Well, it... looked really hard! I really dunno if I could do all o' that... and besides, it ain't really my style..." Yva scratched her head sheepishly."Like I said, I thought the same when I first started. But I'm sure, with me help, ye could do the same thing. Why don't ye just give it a try next time, an' if ye really don't like it, ye can just quit.""Well.... alright. I'll give it a try. Just outta respect fer ya. But I'm warnin' ya, I ain't gonna be any good."Skala smiled. "We'll just have to wait an' see, I 'spose."
